Independence Day 2024
A Declaration for All
At the National Parent Leadership Institute (NPLI), we hold a fundamental belief that democracy thrives on diversity. One of our core philosophies is that 'We the People' truly means everyone. We celebrate the richness of diverse opinions, experiences, and backgrounds, knowing that it is within this tapestry of differences that we find the most inclusive and effective solutions.
Reflecting on the Preamble of Our Nation
As we commemorate the 248th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence this July 4th, we recognize it as both a rebuke to tyranny and a symbol of hope for a government centered on freedom and representation. We also acknowledge a profound truth: the Declaration of Independence was crafted by a group of individuals who did not reflect the diverse tapestry of America today. The voices and identities of many who now call this country home are not represented in that historic document. That document marked an imperfect step toward liberty—a promise of freedom that, in 1776, did not extend to all. It was written at a time when this nation sanctioned violence against Indigenous tribes, the theft of their lands, and the enslavement of people of African descent.
Representation Matters
This Independence Day, NPLI is proud to present a video that features Instituto de Capacitación en Liderazgo Parental (PLTI), Indigenous Parent Leadership Initiative (IPLI), and Instituto de Capacitación en Liderazgo Infantil (CLTI) graduates from various backgrounds reading the preamble to the Declaration of Independence. This visual mosaic is not just a tribute to the founding ideals of our nation but a bold statement of the inclusive future we are committed to building.
This short video serves as more than a commemoration; it's a call to action. It's our affirmation that an inclusive democracy is not a lofty ideal but a necessary foundation for ensuring life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all. We at NPLI are dedicated to making the dream of a representative democracy a reality for every individual.
Acknowledging Our Past, Shaping Our Future
In embracing the full narrative of our history, we understand that the journey toward true democracy is still underway.
Together, let's celebrate Independence Day not just as a historical milestone, but as a renewed commitment to an ever-evolving democracy that needs to embrace every voice. Together, we can build an inclusive future that truly reflects the ideals of liberty and justice for all.
Acknowledging Our Champions of Democracy
Last but not least, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the parent and youth leaders who lent their voices to this video. Their contributions were invaluable in bringing this project to life. By joining us in this project, they have helped us create a powerful testament to the ideals of inclusion and representation.
These leaders embody the spirit of our mission, demonstrating that democracy is strengthened when every voice is heard. Their voices are a vital part of the mosaic that reflects the rich diversity of America today. Their leadership inspires us to continue advocating for a democracy that truly represents everyone.
